La Ferme Pierre

A little local history …

The name of Donnenheim is mentioned for the first time in the 7th century as a possession of the abbey of Wissembourg. For the abbey, a “villa” is a small administrative entity directed by a steward who organizes the peasants and the agricultural activities of the farm. Wissembourg being located on the road of salt going to Lorraine, Donnenheim, in addition to its corvable services, would have been at the dawn of the 12th century one of the relay stations of men and horses which transported salt from Lorraine to the abbey.

For the record, a charter of the commandery of the Order of the Templars, dated 1243, mentions a large farm located northeast of the village, operated by the Templars and the population of Donnenheim.

This 12th century also saw, in addition to an obvious economic boom, a strong “monastic outbreak” of the Cistercian orders which developed considerably under the rule of Bernard de Clairvaux. In our region, the more the influence of the Templars diminishes, the more the place of Cistercians increases.

The famous Moulin des Moines de Krautwiller (today a producer of spelled flour and a grocery store for organic products) is a vestige, as well as the Alsace North Health Establishment in Brumath, and the magnificent chapel of Hohatzenheim, dating from the 12th century.

The building of La Ferme Pierre *** as it remains in part today was built in 1796 in the heart of Donnenheim, then renowned for its cultivation of hemp and hops. At that time the farm was a vast autonomous agricultural domain, with vegetable garden, pigs, rabbits, chickens and cows. The owners often had employees staying on site.

Part of the estate, at the level of the current entrance, was used for drying hops, then later for tobacco.

It was in 2005 that this then partly dilapidated family farm was completely refurbished and arranged into 5 fully-equipped tourist accommodation, while preserving part of its soul to promote the local Alsatian heritage.
